623. Narrated Ibn ‘Abbaas (radhi Allaahu anhu) : I heard Allaah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) saying,
If the son of Adam had money equal to a valley, then he will wish for another similar to it, for nothing can fill (satisfy) the eye of Adam’s son except dust (*). And Allaah (Subhahanu wata’alaa) forgives him who (repents to Him) begs for His pardon.
[Saheeh Al-Bukhaari, Hadeeth No. 445, Vol. 8]
(*) [H.623] Means his death.

‘Alee ibn Abee Taalib (radhi Allaahu anhu) said to Kumail ibn Ziyaad,
Knowledge is better than wealth. Knowledge is a protection for you, whereas it is you that has to protect wealth. The zakaat of knowledge is action, whereas spending decreases wealth. And love of the Scholar is part of the Religion. Knowledge brings about obedience for the Scholar in his own lifetime and causes him to have good repute after his death, whereas the benefit of wealth ceases when it passes away. The hoarders of wealth have died even though they are still alive, whereas the Scholars remain for as long as time remains – their persons are lost, but their examples remain in the hearts.
Reported by Abu Nu’aym in Hilyatul-Awliyaa (1/79-80), al-Khateeb al-Baghdaadee in al-Faqeeh wal-Mutafaqqih (1/49-50) and Ibn Katheer in al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah (9/47).
621. Narrated Anas bin Malaik (radhi Allaahu anhu) : Allaah’s Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said,
The son of Adam (i.e.,man) grows old and so also two (desires) grow old with him, (and they are); love for wealth and (a wish for) a long life.”

Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said,
Two ravenous wolves remaining amongst sheep whose owner has lost them will not be more harmful than a Muslim’s seeking after wealth and status is to his Deen
[It is quoted by al-Haithumee in Majma` uz-Zawaa`id (10/250) and he attributed it to at-Tabaraanee in al-Awsat and said, “Its isnaad is hasan (good).”]
Shaykhul-lslaam Ibn Taymiyyah (d.728H) – rahimahullaah – said:[1]
The position of wealth should be regarded like that of the toilet, in that there is need for it, but it has no place in the heart, and it is resorted to when needed.
